Family Therapy
Helping Families Live Well Together
Families are our first experience of belonging — the place we first learn how to trust, communicate, and be seen. When that place is consistently safe and loving, it becomes a lifelong source of resilience. But families are made of humans caught up in a complicated, difficult, and quickly changing world. Amid this, parents are confronting their own traumas, regrets, insecurities, failures, and imperfect relationships. Children are confronting complex and sometimes painful social environments at school. And, sometimes, parents and children seem to navigate life in fundamentally different ways that are difficult to bridge.
These dynamics can create stressful home environments and challenges for parents learning how to effectively support their children. Often, this work begins as an extension of a teen’s individual therapy, growing naturally into something the whole family needs to navigate together.
Family Therapy provides a space to understand the dynamics, roles, and patterns that have shaped your family — and to intentionally reshape the ones that no longer serve you. Whether we meet with your whole family, a parent-child pair, or you alone as you navigate a family relationship, we work together toward the trust, communication, and mutual understanding your family deserves. While this work most often centers a parent and child at home, we also welcome adult family members — siblings, parents and adult children, or other configurations — working through their own patterns together and developing deeper, more functional, and more fulfilling relationships.
A Path to Understanding and Repair
Family systems are dynamic — a shift in one relationship ripples through the whole. In session, we help each family member feel truly heard, even amid conflict, while working toward patterns that support everyone’s wellbeing, not just the loudest or most urgent need in the room.
Together, we work to:
- Improve Communication: Learn to speak and listen across generational, developmental, and neurotype differences without shutting each other out.
- Repair Ruptures: Rebuild trust after conflict, estrangement, or painful patterns that have built up over time.
- Understand Your Family System: Recognize the roles, rules, and patterns — spoken and unspoken — that shape how your family relates, and where they help or hurt.
- Navigate Big Transitions: Move through changes like divorce, blending households, a new diagnosis, or a family member’s coming out with intention rather than crisis.
- Bridge Neurodivergent Communication: Build a shared language that honors different processing styles, sensory needs, and ways of connecting.
- Reconnect With the Body: Use somatic awareness to notice what’s happening in the body during family conflict or closeness, long before words catch up.
Sessions may include your whole family, a specific pair (like a parent and child), or an individual member working on a family relationship — whatever configuration best serves what you’re working toward.
Who We Work With
Parent-Child Conflict & Communication
When conflict with a child or teen feels constant or exhausting, it’s rarely about defiance alone — it’s often a mismatch in communication style, developmental stage, or unmet need on either side. We help you build a relationship based on connection, not control.
Families Navigating Mental Health or Addiction
When a family member’s mental health struggle or addiction touches the whole household, roles can shift in ways that go unspoken — caretaking, avoidance, walking on eggshells. We help your family name what’s happening and find healthier ways to support one another and yourselves.
Supporting a Family Member’s Gender or Sexuality Journey
When a family member comes out or begins exploring their gender or sexuality, families sometimes need their own support finding a path toward acceptance and advocacy — even when love was never in question. We offer an affirming space to process questions, grief, and growth at every family member’s own pace.
ADHD, Autism & Neurodivergent Family Communication
Parenting or living alongside an ADHD or Autistic family member sometimes calls for a different communication toolkit than most parenting resources offer — one that doesn’t treat their brain as a problem to fix. We help you build affirming, effective ways to connect, set expectations, and understand your family member’s experience of the world, so every person feels genuinely seen for who they are, not just managed.
We’re affirming of all identities, family structures, and configurations.
Our Integrated Approach
Our work is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — building a values-driven family life by accepting what can’t be changed and committing to actions aligned with what actually matters to your family. Alongside ACT, we draw on:
- Family Systems Theory: Understanding your family as an interconnected whole, where each member’s patterns, roles, and reactions shape — and are shaped by — everyone else’s. Rather than isolating “the problem person,” we look at the system as a whole to create lasting change.
- Nonviolent Communication (NVC): A concrete framework for expressing needs and hearing each other’s without triggering defensiveness — across any age gap.
- Somatic Reflection: Slowing down to notice bodily signals — tension, shutdown, activation — as real-time data about what’s happening beneath the words.
- Emotional Acceptance & Mindfulness: Making room for difficult emotions like anger, grief, or fear instead of managing them away, so they stop running the household from the shadows.
- Environmental Considerations: Examining the external structures — schedules, finances, school, extended family, living situations — that either support or strain a healthy family system.
Where We Meet
We currently offer family therapy in:
- Georgia — in-person at our Scottdale office (just outside Decatur, in ITP Atlanta) or virtual, statewide.
- Texas — virtual only.
Our Commitment to You
In session, you can expect a warm, non-judgmental space where every family member’s voice is heard and valued — including the youngest or quietest one in the room. We’ll check in regularly to make sure our work together is meeting your family’s actual goals, not an assumption about what your family “should” look like. We are neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQ-affirming, and committed to honoring the shape and structure that’s right for your family.
